Single Market, euro and structural reforms are key to Europe’s competitiveness

Speaking today, in Rome, at the first of a series of roundtables organised by the World Economic Forum on “Building a more competitive Europe”, Prime Minister Mario Monti welcomed the fact that Italy has climbed up five places in the WEF’s Global Competitiveness Report to 43rd position. This is not enough, he said, hoping Italy will be in a much more flattering position next year.

The Rebuilding Competitiveness initiative has the merit to bring growth back to the centre of our policy discussions, which are still dominated by an almost theological debate about austerity and how to introduce ever more binding and sophisticated tools to control national public finances and avoid excessive public debt.

In the end, Europe will exit from the crisis only when it will return to growth that is fully consistent with fiscal discipline”. He added: The Single Market, the euro and structural reforms remain the three best foundations on which we can rebuild Europe’s competitiveness”. “Rebuilding competiveness in Europe” will be repeated by the WEF in other European capitals in the next months.
